They were told to stand in a line, one after the other and precisely behind the child in front of them. Perfect conformity.

I’m not sure that there is a better way to manage small children crossing the street, but perhaps we need to do a better job of teaching our youth (and adults and ourselves) that conformity isn’t always the best option?
