Acknowledging our bias and allowing information to change us.

It’s always good to remind ourselves to be malleable in how we face the world. To allow our views to change over time.

I was recently faced with recognizing my own bias. I had a conversation with someone who does not speak fluent English. I realized in my meeting with her that I was surprised by her intelligence. I initially took our difficulty communicating to be because she didn’t understand what was going on in a complex situation. In fact, it was clear in conversation that she understood well. It wasn’t a fact misunderstanding, it was simply the way we communicate our understanding – language.
