Season of sacrifice.

Gretchen Rubin and Elizabeth Craft talk about a “season of sacrifice” on their Happier podcast to refer to periods in life that are particularly busy. As a TV writer, Elizabeth Craft definitely experiences these crazy-busy periods, contrasted with lulls in the work load; but all of us experience cycles that are particularly busy.

This summer, for the first time since entering the workforce in earnest a decade ago, I experienced the opposite of a season of sacrifice. I have spent the last couple of months working for myself. While I desire to someday run two successful service-oriented businesses, this start-up period has been very calm as I write, study, and prepare to someday have many clients.

Soon, I will be much busier with some side work that I’m taking on. In many ways, I don’t want this current period to end. The space I have created for creativity, thinking, and writing has been amazing. And yet, I am excited for what’s to come.

I have learned a lot from this experience – with time for things I love, but also for work that I think will pay off in the long run. It has been so valuable and enjoyable. I will seek to create it again in the future.

Could you benefit from a “season of space” in your life? Maybe you can’t quite your job, or to put work on hold for a period, but are there some things you can stop doing for a month or two and allow that time to be filled with whatever moves you?

Maybe there is a creative project you have been wanting to work on. Can you create space for it just for a period? Maybe you wont finish, but maybe you can at least get started.
