A study covered in this New York Times article involves a small sample size, but shows potentially that running has some benefits to our hearts that swimming lacks – probably because we fight gravity less when swimming.
I think the takeaway from this article is another affirmation that cross training is great for us, which highlights why triathlon is such a great sport – getting us out doing all kinds of different activities.
Admittedly, I don’t do as much cross training when not training for a triathlon. I haven’t been in the pool since my last Ironman in early March! But I just signed up for Masters swimming again to get me back and to allow me to follow someone else’s direction instead of create plans myself. A good option for my current priorities.
